Altama Presbyterian Church, a longstanding landmark at the intersection of Community Road, Cypress Mill, and Altama Avenue in Brunswick, Georgia, has been a cherished part of the community for years. While the familiar exterior has remained unchanged since its construction in the 1970s, the church is currently undergoing exciting transformations.
Altama Presbyterian Church is embarking on a transformational journey under the direction of its new pastor, Rev. Jamil el-Shair. The church has decided to relocate and entrust its property to Hand in Hand of Glynn Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to housing the homeless. This bold move envisions the construction of 60 one-bedroom efficiencies, often referred to as "tiny homes," with 16 units expected to be completed by year-end. This initiative aligns seamlessly with the congregation's deep commitment to aiding the less fortunate, echoing the church's core mission of community service and selfless generosity.

A Shepherd of Hearts and Souls
Rev. Jamil el-Shair, our devoted spiritual leader, joined Altama Presbyterian Church in the fall of the previous year, infusing our congregation with inspiration and guidance. Initially serving as the pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Midway, he began at Altama Presbyterian as a temporary fill-in pastor. However, a profound connection with our congregation led to a permanent role, aligning with his passion for smaller congregations and our church's mission.
Rev. el-Shair swiftly became an integral part of our community, forging connections with fellow Presbyterian ministers in Brunswick. Together, they are dedicated to advancing their shared vision for the community. Under his leadership, our church has not only weathered new challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, but has thrived. Innovative approaches to worship and community engagement, including virtual services and remote communion, have kept our congregation growing and closely knit. We are deeply grateful for Rev. Jamil el-Shair's leadership, his unwavering commitment to our mission, and his dedication to the spiritual well-being of our congregation.
